Silva Out, Liriano In May 15th, 2006 at 3:54 pm

I wasn’t so sure Gardy would do it, but alas he made the only sane decision possible: he’s pulling Silva out of the rotation in favor of Francisco Liriano.

Liriano will make his first start of the season on Friday night. I don’t expect him to go too deep into the game considering he has been in the bullpen all year. The most he’s thrown all season is probably around 50 pitches, so I’d be surprised if he goes more than 5, maybe 6, innings, but anything’s better than what Silva has given us.

“[Gardenhire] made it clear that he considers Silva one of the team’s starters and that Silva will rejoin the rotation once he figures out how to regain his lost confidence”.

I suspect that if Silva rejoins the rotation it will be in replacement of another struggling starter, most likely Lohse. Liriano should stay in the rotation for the remainder of the season (and seasons to come). Even if he struggles a bit I hope the team will have at least half as much patience as it’s had with Radke, Silva and Lohse up to this point.

Last night’s loss was no fun, but at least something good came out of it. Hopefully Silva will get things figured out because, strangely, the Twins need all the help they can get with starting pitching.
