Signings and Some Insanity January 20th, 2008 at 10:00 pm
Late last week the Twins completed deals with 3 of the 5 arbitration eligible players. Jason Kubel received a 1-year $1.3 million deal, Juan Rincon got a 1-year $2.475 million deal and Justin Morneau got a deal that will pay him $7.4 million dollars.
Last year the Twins were criticized for not locking up Justin Morneau to a long-term deal, and they’ve (so far) failed to do so again this year. It’s very possible that the contract could later be torn up to be replaced with a new long-term deal, and that’s certainly the rumor that’s been going around. It’s entirely possible that Morneau’s deal could depend on the eventual outcome of the Johan Santana saga. Regardless of what happens, last year was the best time to lock up Morneau. His price is only going to go higher as the Twins wait.
Now for the insanity. Charley Waters’ Sunday snippets said Ron Gardenhire is considering Michael Cuddyer as the center fielder for 2008. Just about anyone who watched an inning or more of Twins baseball last year could spend a few hours naming guys in the Twins’ organization that would be a better option in CF than Cuddyer (nothing against Cuddyer, it’s just he’s not known for his range). I came up with three possible explanations:
- Gardy was joking and Walters didn’t catch onto that.
- Walters totally misunderstood what Gardy was saying.
- Gardy has gone insane.

I'm sure it was just a Gardy-ism. You know Gardy, he opens his mouth and these weird things just kind of come out….
