Series preview - Tampa Bay, take 2 May 1st, 2007 at 7:00 am

The Twins and D-rays split a 4-game set in their first meeting at the Metrodome early in the year. The Twins were lucky to escape with one of the wins as they relied on a top of the ninth inning brain cramp from Carl Crawford and bottom of the ninth walk-off from Justin Morneau to escape with a 3-2 victory.

The Twins will head down to the dome in Tampa Bay to take on the Devil Rays who just won their series against Oakland 2 games to 1 and also recently swept the Yankees in a 2 game series. Still, the D-rays record is the inverse of the Twins’ at 11-14.

The pitching matchups:

  • Tuesday: Edwin Jackson, RHP (0-3, 6.10) vs. Sidney Ponson, RHP (1-3, 8.44)
  • Wednesday: Jae Seo, RHP (1-2, 9.51) vs. Boof Bonser, RHP (0-1, 5.26)
  • Thursday: Scott Shields, RHP (2-0, 3.75) vs. Ramon Ortiz, RHP (3-1, 2.57)

The Twins offense finally gets a break from some lefties for a few games and I hope they can do their part to keep those Devil Ray ERAs up there. Sidney Ponson could be pitching for his job, so it’s definitely worth watching.

If Jeff Cirillo’s Monday night rehab assignment went well then he could replace Alexi Casilla on the Twins roster. Luis Castillo is still day-to-day and could return for the series.

Here goes another loss for the Twins with "Sir" Sidney. I thought in baseball it was three strikes and you're out….except, I guess, if you are Gardenhire….why, oh why,….Don't know if this team is going to be worth supporting with the overloaded pitching staff…the rest of the team is doing fine but the "bad luck Benny"(Ponson) is bringing them down really badly…I predict a big loss , he'll probably give them homeruns all night….and my big question is why Gardenhire will pull pitchers out when things are going badly even it they have only pitched to two guys, but Ponson can stay in forever (well 5 -6 innings )and give away the game and nothing happens from the managers….what is that??.

Terry Ryan brought in Ponson, and in a way Gardenhire is obligated to give him a chance to succeed. Don't worry Margie, if Ponson keeps pitching like he has he will be gone very soon and you will have forgotten about him completely by the second half of the season.

Ponson certainly isn't helping, but a handful of starts early on isn't going to sink the Twins. The Twins have lost 11 games, Ponson can only be blamed for 3 of those.

The Good news is we have three pitchers at the AAA level (Baker, Slowey and Garza) who have looked great so far this year and are able to take the job.
