Series preview - Boston Red Sox May 4th, 2007 at 6:21 pm
The Twins have had an up-and-down past couple of weeks. They struggled against KC and Cleveland before looking pretty good last weekend against Detroit. They went on to lose the final two games of the series against Tampa Bay. The toughest stretch of their schedule so far begins this weekend against the Red Sox. Boston comes to the dome with the best record in the AL at 18-9.
The Twins will be fortunate to miss arguable the two better starters for the Red Sox, Josh Beckett and Daisuke Matsuzaka, but they will still see Curt Schilling who has been stellar except a couple of starts. The full pitching matchups for the series:
- Friday: Carlos Silva (2-1, 3.10) vs. Tim Wakefield (2-3, 2.59)
- Saturday: Johan Santana (3-2, 3.60) vs. Julian Tavarez (1-2, 7.58)
- Sunday: Sidney Ponson (2-3, 6.67) vs. Curt Schilling (3-1, 3.15)
Friday night’s game could be the key to the series with such lopsided pitching matchups on Saturday and Sunday. Sunday has the potential to be an ugly one for the Twins with Sidney Ponson pitching to an offense that 143 runs, 1 run short of the lead league.
Boston, obviously has an excellent lineup with Manny Ramirez, David Ortiz and new addition this year J.D. Drew. Cuddyer is still sore and day-to-day, so the Twins will need to find another way to make the offense work in his absence. Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau can’t be leaving runners on the bases. It’d also be nice to see Jason Kubel repeat his success of last year against Boston when he hit a walk off grand slam in the 12th.
