Sabathia dominates, Silva returns to form May 16th, 2007 at 11:05 pm
In the series preview on Monday I said C.C. Sabathia was a bad match up for the Twins offense right now, and that certainly proved true on Wednesday night. The game started after a 30 minute rain delay, but the Twins’ bats weren’t ever able to get much going off of Sabathia. They managed just 1 run on 5 hits and a walk through eight innings and were defeated handily by a score of 7-1.
Ubelmann said in the pregrame post over at SBG:
“Is it a bad time to mention that Carlos Silva’s xFIP is 4.79, and that he’s currently sporting an unsustainable 5.9% HR/F and an unsustainable 82.4% LOB%?”
Yes, ubelmann, it was a bad time to mention that, but once again you were dead on. Silva allowed 5 runs over 6 innings to bump his era up to 3.56. It was, without doubt, his worst start of the season, but I hate to say it will probably be duplicated again soon.
Chris Heintz saw his first start since being called up to fill the backup role while Joe Mauer is out. He didn’t waste much time displaying why he spends most of his time on the bench. He singled in his first at bat, but was later thrown out near second to end the inning after he rounded the base a bit too much. The base running blunder combined with his inability to block any ball in the dirt makes me anticipate the return of Mauer that much more.
Game Notes
- Nick Punto had a 2-hit night and drove in the Twins only run of the game in the second inning.
- Torii Hunter had 2 hits.
- Jason Bartlett and Jeff Cirillo each had doubles in the game.
- Julio Depaula, who was just called up after Jesse Crain went to the DL pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
It will be up to Johan Santana to salvage a game in this series. The Twins have now lost 5 straight series and slipped to 3 games under .500. Fausto Carmona pitches for Cleveland and is a guy the Twins should be able to hit (although they has little success against him last month). The game starts at 11:05 AM CT.
