Ponson pitches well, Durbin struggles March 26th, 2007 at 11:29 pm
With just a week to go until the start of the season on April 2nd, Sidney Ponson had his best start of the spring against his former team, the Baltimore Orioles. With 2 pretty bad outings and 2 pretty good outings this spring, Ponson has seemingly locked up a spot in the Twins’ rotation along with Johan Santana, Boof Bonser and Ramon Ortiz. I expect Ponson to fill out the fifth spot of the rotation. Whether Carlos Silva or Matt Garza will get that fourth spot is yet to be determined, but I’d sleep a lot better at night if I knew it was Garza.
Any chance J.D. Durbin had of returning to the majors has been shot to dust by a horrendous spring training capped off with 5 hit, 4 run 7th inning on Monday against Baltimore. Mike Venafro continued a stellar spring with 1 scoreless inning to end the game. The lefty deserves a spot in the Twins bullpen and if a guy like Carlos Silva gets it instead, I might be more upset than when the Twins took Juan Castro north with them after last spring.
The Twins play the Yankees on Tuesday and rumor has it that ESPN is televising the game.
