Offense absent again
Boof Bonser turned in a decent start on Saturday night against the Brewers, but once again the offense gave the starting pitcher virtually no chance to win. The Twins bats were up against Dave Bush, who had a 3-6 record and an ERA of 5.70 coming into the game. Scoring runs shouldn't have been a problem, yet they managed just 2 runs through the entire game.
No home runs were hit in the game, but the Brewers got out to an early lead in the third when J.J. Hardy drove in Damian Miller on a fielder's choice. The Twins tied it up in the fifth with a Jason Bartlett ground out that scored Lew Ford from third. The Brewers took back that run in the next inning on another set of doubles from Prince Fielder and Bill Hall.
With 92 pitches thrown, Boof Bonser came out for the seventh, but couldn't complete it. He struck out the first batter, Geoff Jenkins, but then hit Damian Miller. Craig Counsell doubled to knock Boof out of the game. Matt Guerrier then allowed a 2-run single to the first batter he faced, Corey Hart.
Joe Mauer ended an 0-13 slump with a 2-out triple in the seventh that scored Jason Bartlett and cut the Brewer lead to two. The Brewers would add another run in the eighth and the Twins went on to a 5-2 loss.
Game Notes
- Bonser got the loss and dropped to 5-3 on the season.
- Pat Neshek pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings to complete the game
- Nick Punto led the Twins with 2 hits, including one double in the fifth.
- The Twins dropped back to .500 with a 33-33 record.
Kevin Slowey (2-0, 3.71) will try to salvage a game against Jeff Suppan (7-7, 4.04) on Sunday afternoon at 1:10 PM CT. The success of this team will depend on its offense that's averaged just over 3 1/2 runs per game in the month of June.
Remember Rondell?
Well, I'm starting to wonder if he'll ever come back. MLB.com's Leslie Parker reports:
After appearing as DH and going 2-for-3 in a game between two of the Twins' rookie-ball clubs on Friday, White came in Saturday and reported major soreness. He was supposed to participate in another scrimmage Saturday, but was given the day off. Source: MLB.com
It's pretty sad that a professional athlete still can't get back from an injury sustained while coming out of the dugout 2 months ago. My hope is that GM Terry Ryan isn't thinking he doesn't need to make a trade because Rondell will be back in the lineup soon.
