More Roster Cuts
Ron Gardenhire brought the team a little bit closer to its opening day Roster this morning by naming Jose Morales the opening day backup catcher to Mike Redmond. Drew Butera, thought to be the favorite for the job because of his defensive superiority, was cut from camp.
On the pitching side, Jose Mijares, was cut from camp. The move was expected after Mijares showed up to camp overweight and didn't perform well this spring. The Twins' bullpen is a major question mark this season, so it's almost a sure bet that he'll be in the majors by mid-season.
The moves leave the Twins with just a couple more decisions to make, mainly deciding if they'll bring 11 or 12 pitchers north. R.A. Dickey stands to win if they go with 12 pitchers, while Matt Tolbert or possibly Brian Buscher are hoping the team goes with just 11 pitchers.
The talk has leaned toward Tolbert being the position player that's on the line, but in my mind he seems like a better option than Buscher. Tolbert offers a little more versatility in terms of positions he can play and he can bat from both sides of the plate. Buscher, on the other hand, is a poor defensive player with less speed, but would provide some pop against right handed pitching.
