How Bad are the Twins? May 2nd, 2006 at 7:00 am

Following this paragraph will be some numbers that display just how awful the Twins have been. If you have a heart condition or are wearing mascara, you may want to stop reading right now. Now here are the worst teams in runs score and runs allowed in the league.

2006 Runs Scored
Runs ScoredGames PlayedRuns/Game
Royals85233.70
Pirates102273.77
Padres98253.92
Twins99253.96
Marlins99234.30

Only 3 teams in baseball are scoring fewer runs per game than the Twins. Where’s the much improved offense we thought we had?

2006 Runs Allowed
Runs AllowedGames PlayedRuns/Game
Twins156256.24
Orioles160275.93

This is the most disturbing statistic of the two. Only the Orioles have given up more runs this season than the Twins, but they’ve done it in 2 more games than the Twins. This means that the Twins have given up more runs per game than any team in baseball. That’s really scary considering their pitching was supposed to be the strong part of the team.

What to do?

Nobody wants to panic with 5 months of baseball remaining in the season, but at the same time it’s now May and if things don’t change fast there will need to be changes. The Twins are in a strong division and there’s not enough time to wait for 12 guys to bust out of slumps. At some point (very soon) some drastic decisions must be made. Some questions we should all be asking:

  • How much longer do we wait before parting ways with Rondell White?
  • With only 2 homers so far, is Tony Batista really worth it?
  • How much longer must Jason Bartlett and Jason Kubel stay in the minors?
  • When is it time to put Fransisco Liriano in the rotation, and who should go?
  • How many more times does Jesse Crain need to fail before he get’s booted?
  • At what point do we start planning for 2007?
