Good day for Twins fans July 10th, 2006 at 7:00 pm

Jose Contreras has declared himself unable to play in the All-Star game after throwing 117 pitches and getting hit in the elbow on Sunday. This has created room for Francisco Liriano, and at 22 years old Liriano will attend his first All-Star game. A lot of credit should be given to Contreras for opting out and allowing Liriano to get a chance. Tom Glavine did the same thing for the NL and allowed Chris Capuano of the Brewers to make the team.

Sierra released

After a year of injuries and a lack of playing time, Ruben Sierra has been released by the Twins. The acquisition of Sierra never made much sense (at least to me) and it became quite clear that there wasn’t a real good role for Sierra on this team. He couldn’t play a position and between Mauer’s off days as catcher, Shannon Stewart and Jason Kubel there wasn’t room for him to DH. He also wasn’t effective in the job he was brought here to do, pinch hit.

There’s no word yet on who will replace Sierra. I hope it won’t be Rondell White who has been on the DL “loosening up his shoulder.” A reasonable pick would be outfielder Jason Tyner who has a .379 OBP at AAA Rochester. However, he bats from the left side, so he wouldn’t be a good complement to Jason Kubel in left. He does have good speed and would be a valuable addition as a pinch hitter/runner late in games.
