Gomez Makes Case for CF

The Twins game today against the Phillies was televised on FSN and I got a chance to watch a large portion of it. Tomorrow's game is also televised (WFTC29).

It was a big day for Carlos Gomez, who started in RF next to CF Denard Span. Gomez followed up his 2-5 day on Friday with a 3-4 day at the plate, including his first home run of the spring. He also showcased his speed a few times. He stole two bases, including 1 where he was picked off at first but was fast enough to beat out the throw to second from Philly first baseman Wes Helms. Following that play he scored on a Delmon Young single.

Just when it seemed things were starting to fall in favor of Denard Span to open the season in CF, Gomez may again be the favorite if he can continue to put together consistent at-bats. It seems like everyone in the Twins' organization is anxious to give Gomez a chance.

Kevin Slowey all but sealed a spot in the starting rotation, with a nice start today. He allowed one run and struck out 5 in 4 innings. With Scott Baker expected to start the season on the DL, it makes it even more likely that Slowey will get a job in the rotation.

Jason Kubel hit his second homer of the spring and Nick Punto got a 2-run triple to deep left-center late in the game.
