Game 2: That's More Like It April 5th, 2006 at 9:33 pm

Twins Win! Only Tony Batista could be stopped tonight. The first few days of this season have seen a lot of high scoring games, so clearly a lot of pitchers haven’t worked off their rust yet. However, it was still nice to see the Twins put some runs up on the board. It provides a glimmer of hope that maybe this offense is improved over last season. In all of 2005 the most runs the Twins scored in a single game was 12. We’ve already surpassed that with 13 tonight!

I’ve got a formal game recap up in the scoreboard section, so be sure to check that out if you weren’t able to catch the whole game. The highlights of tonight’s game:

  • Hunter had a huge 6 RBI night which included a 2-out 8th inning grand slam after White struck out looking.
  • Castillo and Mauer were able to get on base a lot tonight. Castillo also ran the bases agressively going from 1st to 3rd on a Mauer single. A big part of the Twins’ success this season will rely on those two.
  • Liriano pitched two innings in relief and looked good against a pretty good Blue Jays lineup. He gave up 2 hits and 0 walks.

The Twins will face left-hander Gustavo Chacin tomorrow. Kubel will likely have the day off and Cuddyer will get the start in right. Detroit slaughtered Kansas City today, so they currently lead the Division, which doesn’t much matter at this point. Cleveland beat Chicago today in 11 innings; unfortunately they’ll have tomorrow off to rest up before the Twins head there for the weekend.

Just a little piece of constructive criticism for Tony Batista before I get into my feelings on the game tonight. How do you not reach a pitch on the outside part of the plate when you're practically standing on the inside of the plate when you finsih your swing, You baffle me. To every other Twins hitter tonight, way to hit the ball hard! Even alot of our outs were hit right on the screws, and we took advantage of every mistake Toronto made. Castillo is tremendous at the top of the lineup, and Rondell White is impressing me with how hard he's hitting the ball when he makes contact. If it's at all possible this early in the season tonight's game validated that not only will the Twins offense be better this year;It will be alot better. Just an excited fan's point of view. I can't wait til Silva gets to test the infielders tomorrow.

White didn't have a great night tonight, but he's impressed me so far with his ability to move runners along. He had RBI sacrifices both last night and tonight. Last season, we got infield popups and strikeouts in situations like that.
