Done Deal. Delmon Young is a Twin November 28th, 2007 at 10:30 pm

Lavelle just posted that the deal has been finalized.

Juan Rincon is out, apparently due to elbow concerns and has been replaced by pitching prospect Eduardo Morlan. Morlan was a 3rd round pick in 2004 and is definitely not as easy to give up as Juan Rincon (and his $2 million salary). Nevertheless, I still like the deal.

The Twins are still left with gaping holes in center field and at third base. Young will likely field a corner position, opposite Michael Cuddyer. While Young doesn’t have the range to play center, he has a good arm, which has been sorely lacking in left field the past couple years.

With Johan Santana and Joe Nathan’s names still being thrown around as possible trade bait, it seems the Twins are far from finished dealing. This trade would seem to mark the end of Craig Monroe’s possibility of being a Twin next season.

Oh well, the twins have gone into full rebuilding mode. I 'll watch them on TV, but don't see any reason to buy tickets for the next 5-10 years!

That's a little premature, Jerry. Delmon Young is a legitimate threat now, as runner up for ROY, and with he and Cuddyer at corner OF positions, they have two of the best arms in the majors. Let's not judge Smith's moves until he's done making them.

I agree Joel. This move in itself is not a sign of rebuilding (like a Santana or Nathan trade would be). This move offers an instant upgrade to the lineup with Young as well as an upgrade at SS.

Matt Garza is just as much of a guy you'd like to "rebuild" around as Young, so this is more of a sign of giving up a strength (pitching) to fill a weakness (offense) than it is a sign of rebuilding.

I'm so happy with this deal. Garza could be great, but that position is much harder to judge than outfield, and there's no doubting Delmon is a stud at this stage. Also, if we do deal with the Yankees, this opens up space in the starting rotation for Ian Kennedy or Phil Hughes or even Wang, which is good because young pitching is really the only reason to do that deal.

The only thing that makes me upset about the deal is Bartlett. He's been mentioned in our mix for almost as long as I can remember, and it's a shame he hasn't exactly panned out for us. But such is life. I'm getting a Delmon Young jersey. I'm almost positive.
