Crede earns his keep
Joe Crede hasn't had the most spectacular start with the Twins, and is recovering from a string of illness and injury that caused him to miss 6 of the first 10 games of May. Last night though, he got his biggest hit of his Twins career--a walk-off grand slam in the 13th inning. The home run was his second in as many games since sitting the previous 3 games.
A 2-run home run from Jason Kubel in the eighth inning made the extra innings possible after the bullpen failed to hold a sixth inning lead.
Jesse Crain was the 7th Twins pitcher brought into the game, and after pitching a scoreless 12th inning he allowed Detroit's go-ahead run in the 13th. Matt Tolbert provided a game-tying RBI single in the bottom of the inning which led to Crede's grand slam.
When you have a bad bullpen, there are few things more scary than a long extra-inning game. The Twins are fortunate to have survived this one. Somehow they'll have to prepare for a 12:10 game today. A complete game from Scott Baker today would be just about right.
The Twins have again moved their record to .500, but so far this year they've had a tough time improving beyond that. Kansas City lost its 5th straight game which helped the Twins to within just 1 game of Detroit and KC for the division lead.
Game Notes
