Craig Wilson to the Twins? May 22nd, 2007 at 3:42 pm

Last week the Atlanta Braves released Craig Wilson. This afternoon KFAN 1130 reported a rumor that Wilson’s agent is talking with the Twins.

Wilson is a right-handed batter who shows flashes of power, but also strikes out a lot. He had one good year in 2004 with Pittsburgh when he hit 29 homers. Wilson strikes out 3 times as much as he walks. He has played 1B and outfield in the past.

If he’s cheap the signing could be worth it, but it’s unlikely that Wilson could even help the Twins. There’s a reason Atlanta released him. Sure, the Twins could use a little power from the right side of the plate, but Craig Wilson isn’t the answer.

According to ESPN:

If a team claims the veteran off waivers, they would be responsible for the $1.5 million remainder of his one-year contract. If he clears waivers, the team that signs him would pay the prorated portion of MLB’s minumum salary ($380,000).

What are your thoughts? Would signing Wilson make sense?

It looks like talk of Craig Wilson is based purely on a conversation KFAN's Doogie had with Wilson's agent, Steve Hilliard.

This isn't really news unless the Twins are also interested. My guess is Wilson would sign with just about any team right now.

I don't see how Craig Wilson would help the Twins. He is below average defensively and does not show consistant power. The Twins pride themselves on small ball and defense, neither of which Wilson excels at. I would say maybe give him a shot at DH only if he clears waivers and his price tag goes down.
