Sunday's game was a tough loss for the Twins who got an excellent start from Boof Bonser in his major league debut. Boof started out the game on a rough note by loading up the bases with no outs. He then got a sac fly out which scored the first run of the game for Milwaukee. Bonser kept the damage to a minimum by getting the next two batters by way of a fly ball and a strikeout.
Bonser allowed a base runner in just about every inning he pitched, but he was effective in working through the innings. His 8 strikeouts also helped quite a bit. At one point Bonser came back from a 3-0 count to get a strikeout. Bonser left after 6 innings and gave up 5 hits, 3 walks and just the 1st inning run. After the Twins scored one run in the 3rd and 2 runs in the 4th, Bonser was on pace to pick up a win in his first start. Jesse Crain gave up the lead in the 4th though by giving up 4 hits and retiring just one batter. What bothered me most was when the Brewers had scored one run to make the score 3-2 and Jesse Crain has just got his first out on a hard hit ball Gardenhire left him in to give up the lead. It was pretty clear the Crain was struggling, and I think he should've been pulled after that out -- Rincon had been in the pen for a couple batters and was likely ready.
The Twins weren't able to score any runs after the 4th inning and ended up with a dissapointing 5-3 loss.
Game Notes
- Mauer, who often gets day games like today off was in the lineup because of his hot bat (and an off day tomorrow). He had 2 hits, one of which was a well placed bunt between third and the mound. Mauer also drove in the first twins run of the game.
- Tony Batista hit his second homerun of the series with a 2-run shot in the 4th inning.
- Torii Hunter was 2-for-4.
Looking Ahead
The Twins will have 2 off days this week surrounding a short 2-game series with Cleveland at the Dome on Tuesday and Wednesday. Shannon Stewart has been sitting out the past two days with a bad foot. The offdays couldn't come at a better time, but it's still possible he might be placed on the DL with Jason Kubel returning to the team.
