Bartlett Day-to-Day March 26th, 2006 at 2:38 pm
Jason Bartlett, who had been the leading candidate for the starting shortsop gig all through spring hurt his hamstring yesterday after hitting a double in the 8th. It sounds like it’s not too serious, but on the other hand it’s best to be cautious with injuries like this at this time in the season. The last thing anyone wants is hamstring bothering them all season. Bartlett had the following to say:
“It felt almost like a cramp out of the box, but I felt something pop so I kind of went slow,” Bartlett said. “Then I saw I was going for a double and just went. The trainer said if I pulled it, I wouldn’t have been able to do that.”

This could mean that Nick Punto, or possibly even Juan Castro (who is coming back from a WBC wrist injury), could open up the season at shortstop. After a pretty solid spring health-wise, injuries are starting to spring up with Ruben Sierra and Michael Cuddyer also resting after slight injuries. The last thing I want to see is a platoon of Punto and Castro at shortstop for any period of time this season, so let’s hope Bartlett is fully recovered for the start of the season.
I’ll also add that someone in the Twins organization needs to tell Bartlett that it’s spring training and when you feel a cramp, pop or other type of pain you should probably stop running.
