Back in the wild card lead
Despite having a less than stellar holiday weekend, the Twins have found themselves back in the wild card lead with a 1/2 game margin over the struggling White Sox. After losing the series to New York, the Twins beat Tampa Bay Monday afternoon. Boston came back late against the White Sox to help the Twins move into the lead.
Boof Bonser was the star of the day. He gave up only 1 run on five hits and no walks in 6 1/3 innings of work. Bonser hasn't been spectacular, but he's consitently put together decent starts—that's the most you can ask for in a 4th/5th starter.
Rondell White provided the offense with a 2-run homer in the seventh with 2 outs and Justin Morneau on base. Other than that the Twins offense continued to struggle. The put together just six hits in the game with Punto, Mauer and Cuddyer going a combined 0-9 (Mauer had 2 walks).
Game Notes
- Luis Castillo returned to second base and had 2 hits. He's hit a lot better the past month and now finds his average nearing .300 at .296.
- Bonser improved his record to 4-5
- Joe Nathan recorded his 29th save of the season
Liriano doing well
Francisco Liriano threw 78 pitches in the bullpen on Monday and reported that he was feeling great. He's schedule to throw some batting practice on Wednesday and a decision on his return could come shortly after that.
