Another ugly one

The Twins won the opening game of the series on Monday night by a score of 15-2 yet they still managed to get outscored in the series by a score of 21-17 as they dropped Tuesday's game 9-0 and then lost on Wednesday afternoon by a score of 10-2. Boof Bonser showed us again that he's not ready (and may never be) for the major leagues. Sure, he didn't get much help from his defense as Justin Morneau and Nick Punto each made errors in the ugly fourth inning, but Bonser still gave up 6 hits and 2 walks in 4 innings.

Matt Guerrier returned a little earlier than expected and pitched 3 innings in relief of Bonser. He allowed 1 run in the 7th after pitching 2 scoreless innings. Willie Eyre has somehow managed to survive on this roster despite pitching horribly over the past month. He gave up 4 hits and a run in the final two innings of the game.

The Twins desperately need to get their rotation shored up. Liriano should be back in a few days with no problems, but they've still got a couple holes in the rotation and with Radke's continued arm pain they could have a third hole before long. The Twins offense has also found itself in quite a slump since putting up 15 runs on Monday night. They did pick up 12 hits and 5 walks in the game, but somehow managed to score just 2 runs. Mauer, Hunter, Redmond and Tyner all hit into double plays.

Game Notes

  • Nick Punto and Mike Redmond each had 2 hits.
  • Jason Bartlett was 3-4 and his average is continuing to creep upwards and it's now at .348. He, of course, doesn't have enough at bats to qualify as a league leader though.
  • Torii Hunter was 1-3 and he has now had a hit in each of his 3 game since returning from the DL.

To Kansas City

I've said before this season that the Twins should be able to get back on track against Kansas City, but each of those times they've played subpar baseball. So instead of predicting that they'll play well in Kansas City, I'll say that they need to get back on track in Kansas City. Hopefully in a week we can look back at these past two games as a Scott Baker and Boof Bonser induced abberation. Hopefully a couple pitchers will step up and fill out the back end of the rotation. I have my doubts that Mike Smith will be the answer though.
