All-Star Recognition June 23rd, 2008 at 9:22 pm
Much to my surprise, Joe Mauer, took the lead in All-Star balloting for AL Catchers in today’s weekly update of the vote totals. He’s narrowly edging out Boston’s Jason Varitek. It’s not the Mauer doesn’t deserve to be the starting catcher in the mid-summer classic–he certainly does. It’s just that past years have taught us that big market teams (and older veteran players) have a significant advantage in the fan-based voting.
Justin Morneau is in a commanding second place for first basemen, behind Kevin Youkilis of the Red Sox. Youkilis is having a great year, and certainly deserves to get the nod at first. However, both will surely make the trip for the game.
No other Twins appear on the leaderboard, however Joe Nathan is virtually a lock as a manager’s pick, so there’s a strong chance the Twins could still see three representatives at the game, despite losing two stars, Johan Santana and Torii Hunter, in the offseason.
Voting ends July 2nd, so head over to mlb.com and help keep Mauer in the lead.
