2008 Projection: Glen Perkins

Glen Perkins is next on the list for 2008 projections. First, the stats:

Year Age ERA W L INN HR BB K
2008 ZiPS 25 5.42 5 8 103.0 17 47 76
2007 24 3.14 0 0 28.7 2 12 20
2006 23 1.59 0 0 5.7 0 0 6

Perkins came into last season as a long-relief man hoping to become a starter. He went down in late May with a freak injury--a strained muscle in the back of his shoulder. He returned in September and didn't allow any runs in 7 appearances.

Perkins finds himself in the same situation this year. He's unlikely to be a starter on opening day and instead figures to be another lefty out of the bullpen. Starting is not yet out as an option for Perkins, but the situation is starting to remind me of Matt Guerrier who had aspirations of being a starter, but eventually found success and a home as a reliever.

Perkins doesn't have the upside that the other fringe starters (e.g., Philip Humber, Nick Blackburn) have and at age 25 his time is beginning to pass by. He could be a capable stop-gap starter for when times get tough, but it seems much less likely than it did a year ago that he fits into the team's long term plans in the rotation.
