- Rob Delaney and the Twins Front Office
- via Twinkie Talk January 28, 2011 at 05:53 PM
Recently waived Twins reliever Rob Delaney was just claimed by the Rays, sparking a mini-debate (more like an open forum) on Twitter regarding the approach of the Twins front office and teams like the Rays. Parker Hageman of Over the Baggy tweeted that the Delaney moves were representative of the two FO’s approaches. Delaney has great minor league numbers. He has a 1.069 WHIP and strikes out
- One Down, Two To Go: Twins Avoid Arbitration With Slowey
- via Twinkie Talk January 26, 2011 at 11:59 AM
The Twins signed Kevin Slowey to a one year, $2.7 million deal. They have not yet agreed to terms with Francisco Liriano or Delmon Young, though it appears that the front office might be interested in signing them to multi-year deals. Liriano in particular has two more years of service time, and if he continues to perform like he did last year, could get very expensive in arbitration. The Twi
- Jim Perry
- via Twinkie Talk January 25, 2011 at 03:11 PM
Former starting pitcher Jim Perry is the lone selection to the franchise Hall of Fame this year, voted in by a committee consisting of local and national BBWAA members, team officials, previous inductees, and fans. He will be inducted in a special ceremony prior to the game against the Rangers on June 11th. Perry’s induction into the Twins’ HOF is long overdue. According to baseba

- Twins to Sign Pavano; Deal Imminent
- via Twinkie Talk January 19, 2011 at 12:11 AM
MINNEAPOLIS – The waiting game for Twins fans may be nearing an end. It has been reported that the Minnesota Twins are “very close” to signing their ace Carl Pavano. The deal is expected to be finalized and announced by the end of the week, most likely Wedensday. ”I think we’re in the home stretch here,” said GM Bill Smith. The deal is reportedly going to pay P

Matt Capps signs for $7.15 million, avoiding arbitration: Hooray for overpaid middle relievers! Good thing he has closer experience, which will make it much easier to unload him for marginal prospects at the trade deadline, since the Twins certainly won’t be contending this season. On one hand, I don’t necessarily blame Bill Smith for keeping Capps and dealing Hardy. The organizati
- Graph of the Day
- via Twinkie Talk January 17, 2011 at 07:17 PM
Today’s graph features first baseman Justin Morneau. For all the talk about Morneau’s value to the team, his 2010 half year was his best year of his career in terms of fWAR (though, as I have said before, his UZR was inflated a bit this year, for whatever reason). In fact, his 2010 season was equal in fWAR to his 2006 MVP season. Stacked up with him are three of the better first baseme
- Twins Avoid Arbitration With Casilla
- via Twinkie Talk January 16, 2011 at 03:05 PM
Alexi Casilla’s pay is getting almost doubled, as he goes from making $437,500 last year to $865,000 this year. After a couple of subpar seasons offensively, Casilla had a 105 wRC+ last year, though that was in just 170 plate appearances and this is likely just a result of a small sample. Interestingly, Casilla has been plagued by a poor BABIP over the course of his career. It sits at just .
- Jim Thome is Coming Back
- via Twinkie Talk January 14, 2011 at 05:23 PM
So sayeth Kelly Theiser: The Twins announced Friday that they have agreed to terms on a one-year contact with Thome. The designated hitter’s deal is worth $3 million and includes performance bonuses based on plate appearances. One year, $3 million plus incentives is pretty similar to the deal he signed last year, and a pretty good bargain for a player who slugged .627 with home runs in 340 p
- Feeling Strangely Somewhat Optimistic
- via Twinkie Talk January 13, 2011 at 08:11 PM
The Twins haven’t exactly been building a contender this offseason. Oh sure, they signed one of the most sought-after Japanese infielders, but they also traded away their shortstop (and arguably one of the best shortstops in the league) for a bag of balls couple of relievers, and seem content to pencil in the replacement-level Alexi Casilla as the everyday SS. Actually, they’ve been

- WAR Graph of the Day
- via Twinkie Talk January 06, 2011 at 04:47 PM
A couple years ago I wrote a post saying Joe Mauer has a chance to be the best catcher of all time. It doesn’t look like he’ll get there now, but I think he will end up a top 5 catcher fairly easily and could be as good as #2 ever. Not bad for a guy that most people thought would be worse than Mark Prior. Looking at a straight WAR Graph, Mauer doesn’t quite stack up to the other
- Because We Are All Contractually Required to Cover Bert’s Election to the Hall of Fame
- via Twinkie Talk January 05, 2011 at 02:41 PM
Congratulations, Cooperstown! You have elected the only Frying Dutchman in the history of major league baseball. Oh, yeah, and Roberto Alomar probably set some sort of record for a returning candidate, with 90% of the vote. Other notables include Barry Larkin, who fell a bit short with 62.1%, but it’s a considerable gain over the 51.6% he got last year, so it’s likely he will be electe
- Well It’s About Time: Bert Elected to HOF
- via Twinkie Talk January 05, 2011 at 01:29 PM
Bert Blyleven was elected to to the Baseball Hall of Fame today along with former Indians second baseman Roberto Alomar. For Blyleven it has been a long wait and the election is well deserved. Bert has won over the hearts of Twins fans everywhere for not only his on the diamond performances, but for his play-calling in the booth as the sidekick voice of the Minnesota Twins. However, Blyleven got th

- via Twinkie Talk January 05, 2011 at 12:41 AM
By a vote of 63-1, you guys obviously think Bert should be in the Hall of Fame. But will the voters finally get it right this year? Chris Jaffe thinks so. We will just have to wait and see.
- WAR Graph of the Day
- via Twinkie Talk January 04, 2011 at 02:11 PM
Two days in a row. That’s what we call a streak people. Today’s WAR graph is actually the first one I ever put into Fangraphs’ feature, and I can’t believe I didn’t lead off with it yesterday, but what are you going to do? I usually like to put four players in one graph, but today it is a straight comparison between the Twins two most recent centerfielders. For all th
- WAR Graph of the Day
- via Twinkie Talk January 03, 2011 at 01:35 PM
A new feature here at Twinkie Talk, probably just for the offseason, is going to be the WAR Graph of the day. If you haven’t heard of such a thing, take a quick gander at this post for the basic way in which it is used. Obviously the ones here are going to be Twins themed, unless there is one I come across that just blows me away. Now, does this mean there will be a graph every day? I think
- Joe Mauer and the 3,000 Hit Club
- via Twinkie Talk January 01, 2011 at 07:47 PM
image source: yardbarker.com Joe Mauer has collected 1,011 hits over the course of his seven-year career, averaging about 196 per 162-game season. At that rate, it would take him another ten years to reach the 3,000 mark, and given that he will be just 28 next year, it seems reasonable to think he will do so. Reaching 3,000 hits isn’t quite the milestone it used to be; some 20 players hav
- Harmon Killebrew Diagnosed with Caner
- via Twinkie Talk December 30, 2010 at 05:29 PM
ROCHESTER — Minnesota Twin’s legend Harmon Killebrew has released a statement reveling the 74-year old Hall of Famer has been diagnosed with esophageal cancer. “While my condition is very serious, I have confidence in my doctors and the medical staff and I anticipate a full recovery,” Killebrew said via his statement. Killebrew is currently undergoing treatment for his cancer at
