When the Twins signed Jim Thome--who, believe it or not, has passed his physical--TBL was cautiously optimistic. He hasn't been at his best the past couple of seasons, but he's still Jim "Holy Crap, Lookit That Go" Thome. And, best of all, he won't be hitting against our pitchers anymore. (The evidence suggests that Thome will still be able to go yard off Twins pitching from

a mistake-rib scarf knit on the biasI love the look of a bias-knit scarf, especially in self-striping yarn, but garter stitch is just so darn boring. So I set about converting my favorite reversible stitch into a bias-knit patterns. Several hilarious test swatches later, I think I got it right...I used James C Brett Marble Chunky on size 10 needles, but the pattern is gaugeless.Sl - slip stitch pu

A few extra tidbits from the Twins’ 12-5 loss to Oakland (because, really, who could get enough?): (*) Francisco Liriano, who had been out since Aug. 17 with left arm fatigue, tossed two scoreless innings in his first relief appearance since May 13, 2006. He entered with the Twins trailing 12-1 in the seventh, so it [...]

Twins first baseman Justin Morneau is not in today’s starting lineup because of a stiff back, as the Twins try to avoid a sweep against Oakland. Joe Crede is back in the lineup, at DH. Update: In his weekly radio show on KSTP AM-1500, Manager Ron Gardenhire said he hopes to find one position for Denard Span next [...]

I’d change the headline, but Detroit’s lead over the Twins hasn’t changed since last Wednesday, when Carl Pavano outpitched Roy Halladay and the Tigers blew a late lead against the Royals. 1) Detroit’s magic number to clinch the AL Central is 15. The Tigers (76-66) lead the Twins (71-72) by six in the loss column. Normally [...]

A number of local and national outlets are reporting that the Timberwolves have come to the end of their search for a new GM and have settled on...David Kahn, a former executive with the Indiana Pacers. You might recall that...
- The Twins Struggles Start at the Top (of the Rotation)
- via Third Base Line May 27, 2009 at 06:09 AM
In the midst of a 6-game losing streak, the Twins currently sit at 18-23, 6 ½ games out of first place in the AL Central. While the bullpen has (predictably) faltered, the two biggest reasons for the team's struggles...

After the abyss o' despair that was the Toronto series, the sucking continued unabated through the seventh-inning stretch on Friday when---WHAM! BANG! BOOM! A week's worth of unused hitting (smuggled onto the field by one Jason Kubel) descended upon the unsuspecting Angels, hitherto possesors of a 9-4 lead.Kubel went 4-for-5 and hit for the cycle, including a lead-grabbing grand s

At last, dear readers, baseball has returned. TBL has little to report: the Dome was crowded, the "food" remains unchanged, the score was not all one hoped it would be. It appears our boys left all the good bats in Florida. Overnight courier, anyone? On the bright side, the Twins are tied for first in the division (with Cleveland and Detroit, who also lost, half a game ahead of Kansas City and

- via Third Base Line March 18, 2009 at 08:21 PM
To be honest, TBL just hasn't been feeling the excitement. Sure, pitchers and catchers reported last week. But that passed in a blur of being food poisoned. And sure, spring training games start this week, but it has been passing in a blur of doing all the things one neglects while puking one's guts up, like going to work. Still, TBL might have worked up some vague feeling of anticipation if t
- Autumnal Knitting: Lotus Hat
- via Third Base Line March 18, 2009 at 08:21 PM
This is an autumn hat I made based on the Crosshatch Lace stitch. I call it "Lotus Hat" because the decrease at the crown forms a lotus-like pattern, while the lace on the body looks rather like stems and leaves. I made it beanie-style, designed to only cover the tips of the ears, but have included instructions for lengthening it.TBL's Lotus HatOriginal patternGauge:5 st/in in stockinetteI used:

National Debt Clock Runs Out of Digits NEW YORK - In a sign of the times, the National Debt Clock in New York City has run out of digits to record the growing figure. As a short-term fix, the digital dollar sign on the billboard-style clock near Times Square has been switched to a figure — the "1" in $10 trillion. It's marking

There may be a Blackberry in TBL's future, as this summer she has found the vast majority of her "free time" on the bus. But she has valiantly carved some few moments out today because she simply could not resist remarking on this comment by Whine Sox pitcher Mark "World's Smallest Violin" Buehrle on the necessity of making up a previously rained out game with the Tigers:"You play 161 games and t

Twins @ BostonTwins 0, Boston 1Twins 5, Boston 6Twins 5, Boston 18 Baseball's a funny ol' game. You're cruising along, winning seven series in a row, sweeping four of them, and all of a sudden, BAM! Ugh. Yet another incident in which a player physically abuses a team employee. After the Astros' Shawn Chacon hit his GM in an argument over his removal (demotion) to the bullpen, we have Manny Ramirez shoving the BoSox traveling secretary to the ground when the man told him he might not be able to secure Manny 16 tickets for that day's game. George Carlin, 1937-2008 This was a guy who turned brutal honesty into an art form. He said what he thought, like it or not. Nothing was taboo because he didn't believe in taboos. He believed in putting it out there, and if it shocked people, then he figured they needed some shocking. When we stuck our heads in the sand and said, "If I don't like it, it's no

TBL has been looking for a good analogy for the season to date, and today she found one. (No points for guessing why this particular analogy came to her...) Watching the Twins so far has been like leaving the office for the lunch hour on a nice sunny day and taking a long, invigorating walk through a picturesque area, in shoes that haven't properly broken in yet.
