- Hello, Baby
- via Extra Bases March 14, 2010 at 10:51 AM
My wife and I welcomed our daughter, Sophia Hayden, into the world on Feb. 22. She weighs 7 pounds, 2 ounces and is 19 inches long. Big brother Matty loves her. I’m taking time off but will be back in early March to talk baseball.
- Warming Up
- via Extra Bases March 14, 2010 at 10:51 AM
Hi everyone, I’m back after two weeks of sleepless nights and burbing/changing/feeding Baby Sophia. The snow is melting, the sun is brighter and March Madness is right around the corner. Which means baseball can’t be far behind. Here are a few items to ponder: Joe Nathan is likely out for the year with a torn ulnar ligament in [...]

Random thoughts as yet another baseball campaign gets underway: - I haven’t been overly impressed by the Twins’ free agent signings for Rochester this winter, but here’s an interesting one if only for his name: Outfielder Charlton Jimerson, 30, has inked a minor-league deal with Minnesota. He played for the Newark Bears of the independent Atlantic League [...]
- This and That
- via Extra Bases February 13, 2010 at 11:59 AM
I received the final manuscript for Silver Seasons and a New Frontier: The Story of the Rochester Red Wings. I have one week to read the new portions (80-plus pages) and scan the old book. Yikes. Book should be out in March. Look for Scott Pitoniak and me at a booksigning near you. Someone suggested to [...]
- (Almost) Live from the Shareholders Meeting
- via Extra Bases January 30, 2010 at 01:11 PM
Just got back from the annual Rochester Community Baseball shareholders meeting at the Doubletree hotel in Henrietta. I haven’t attended this event in a few years, and I am glad I went today. It’s a chance to see a lot of friendly faces in the dead of winter. I’ll have a full report in Sunday’s D&C, [...]
- Grich and Baylor? Pinch me, I’m dreaming
- via Extra Bases January 26, 2010 at 11:35 PM
I was thrilled to hear that Don Baylor and Bobby Grich will be inducted into the International League Hall of Fame this summer. My only hope now is that Red Wings general manager Dan Mason can get them to Frontier Field on the same night for what would be a memorable reunion. I might have gone [...]
- Un-Facebooked
- via Extra Bases January 22, 2010 at 07:36 AM
I received a lot of positive feedback for my most recent blog, in which I offered my thoughts and anecdotes on former Red Wings or players/coaches/managers I’ve bumped into in my 19 years covering the Red Wings. If you ever would like to know what “so-and-so” is/was really like, drop me an e-mail and I’d [...]
- A Trip Down Memory Lane
- via Extra Bases January 12, 2010 at 04:59 PM
Happy New Year, everyone. I just want to lead off with a few thoughts on Mark McGwire’s true confessions. I am glad he finally came clean and was willing to “talk about the past.” But I don’t buy his excuse that it was the “era” that led him to take steroids. MANY star athletes of the day [...]

And To All A Good NIght! See You in 2010!
- The blog is back! Redding, Damon, Granderson, et al.
- via Extra Bases December 18, 2009 at 10:35 PM
The blog makes a rare December appearance to get a few things off my chest: The Minnesota Twins have a golden opportunity to make Red Wings fans happy and also give a shot in the arm to what looks like the 2010 team’s main question mark: starting pitching. Rochester native Tim Redding is a free agent [...]
- The Twins Are In - Japan
- via Extra Bases November 18, 2009 at 01:41 PM
Tuesday’s news that pitcher Juan Morillo and first baseman Justin Huber have signed on with Japanese teams was quite a blow to the 2010 Red Wings. Morillo throws 100 mph (and some of them are even strikes). Huber, a good clubhouse guy, was the ‘09 MVP and was expected to be a major cog in [...]

UPDATE: Twins take 3B Brian Buscher off 40-man roster. This is going to be interesting. Buscher was a rising star after hitting .311 and .319 in brief stints with the Red Wings in 2007 and ‘08. But he flopped in Minnesota this year and hit just .179 after a demotion to Rochester. He can become a [...]

I’ve had a lot of fun with my “friends” on Facebook this week, teasing the Yankee fans about their team’s high payroll. I’m only half kidding. It is true that this is a free marketplace, and the Yankees can spend $3 billion on their payroll if they choose (maybe I shouldn’t give them any ideas). But [...]
- First Impressions
- via Extra Bases October 30, 2009 at 04:01 PM
Today was my first face-to-face meeting with new Red Wings manager Tom Nieto. So far, I like the man a lot. Nieto is 180 degrees different than former manager Stan Cliburn, whom I also like. Stan is brash, loud and full of stories (some of them true). You can’t help but like the man’s passion. Nieto is quieter, lowkey, [...]
- My Talk With Tom
- via Extra Bases October 21, 2009 at 08:53 AM
It’s official: Tom Nieto is the new manager of the Red Wings. This is as big a surprise as CC Sabathia pitching a great game, of course. Nieto has been the man since Twins farm director Jim Rantz said so a month ago. The word came down today, and I called Nieto for a story appearing [...]
- Manic Monday
- via Extra Bases October 20, 2009 at 12:53 PM
Thoughts on two very exciting playoff games on Monday: Joe Girardi has done a great job this year, and probably managed the Yankees bullpen better than Joe Torre did, but he overmanaged today. David Robertson deserved a chance to work out of trouble in the 11th. Robertson had made quick work of the two batters he [...]
- Red Wings Skipper This Week?
- via Extra Bases October 19, 2009 at 10:05 PM
The Red Wings should have a new manager by the end of this week. All the money is on former big-league catcher Tom Nieto. Sources tell me the Twins discussed (and possibly asked) Hall of Famer Paul Molitor about the vacancy in Rochester, but I believe Molitor is quite happy being a roving coordinator through [...]
- Playoff Thoughts

As sports days go, Sunday was one of the worst in my life. The Bills looked like death warmed over against the hapless Browns. The Red Sox couldn’t hold a four-run lead in a park where they’ve dominated all year. And the Twins let one slip away against the cocky Yankees. The Twins get an A [...]
- How ‘Bout Those Red Wings?
- via Extra Bases October 07, 2009 at 07:51 AM
Detroit is quite familiar with the “Red Wings,” from its longtime, beloved NHL team. But Tuesday night, in a thriller for the ages, the fans of Detroit might not have know they were flattened by another Red Wings team. The Rochester Red Wings alumni club. Scott Baker’s steady pitching. Bobby Keppel’s win in relief. Alexi Casilla’s game-winning [...]
- Nothing Short of Amazing
- via Extra Bases October 05, 2009 at 11:21 AM
I’ve watched the resiliency of the Minnesota Twins from a different perspective than fans. I covered many of the current stars on the team, and it’s been like seeing your friend’s children graduate from high school. I still remember the day Jason Kubel joined the Wings from Double-A New Britain in 2004. He was a [...]
